A Beginner's Guide To Building A Website

In the past, building a website may have seemed like a daunting task. However, today making a website can be a lot simpler if you use the right tools. There are various programs that allow you to drag and drop features in a webpage and have a fully functional site within minutes. There are also a number of free templates available from these services.

So if you are a beginner, you are probably wondering how you can build a website and get it online? Here is how you do it.

Using site building platforms

There are several platforms available today that don’t need any coding skills to get started. These systems include WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Wix, Weebly, Shopify among others. Below you'll find a brief description of each so you can get a taste of each one and a sense of which might be most suitable for you.

WordPress

WordPress is one of the best web builders for beginners since it is free and easy to use. If you know how to use Microsoft Word then adding your own content to your website won’t be hard. Beginners can expand the free plugins so that they can handle any site ever imagined. This is the same website tool used by Facebook, eBay, McAfee, Mozilla, Reuters, CNN, Google Ventures and even NASA.

WordPress offers you themes and you can edit one to suit your needs. Although other themes are “Premium” and available for purchase, you can make use of the free themes.

There is a default blog setup that displays your latest posts. However, you can also set up a static home page if you so desire. Adding more pages is a matter of dragging and dropping.

Joomla

Once you have a site structure in your head, Joomla allows you to put it to work. The Joomla “articles” is where all your site content will be stored. So at the Category Manager, you can create your article categories. Creating the main menu with Joomla has also been simplified. The Menu Manager allows you to do that. You also get other styles and features to choose from in order to make your first website a world-class site.

Drupal

Drupal also simplifies the work that goes into a website. You can create new pages on your website by choosing the Content types on the Administration section. If you also wish to put all your news on the front page for people to see what’s new on your website, you can install tools such as the Chaos tool suite module. Having more than a front page is what makes a site look mature enough to attract attention. Drupal makes it easy to create static pages.

Wix

Beginners can make a website in a matter of minutes with Wix. Simply create an account with Wix and click the ‘start now’ button to start creating the website. There are many templates you can choose and edit any to suit your preference. All the editing is a matter of dragging and dropping. You should then save your work when you are done since Wix doesn’t auto save.

Weebly

You only need to create an account from their official site to start off. Beginners can then decide on the focus of their site once they are done with the signup process. Just like other site builders, there are several themes to choose from that enable you to be creative. You can drag elements found under the small element box at the top under ‘W Free’. When you are through, you can click ‘publish.’

Shopify

With Shopify, it is easy to select a professionally designed theme and make it your own. This tool has globally recognized designers like Pixel Union and Happy Cog, who have created over 100 themes for beginners or experts to choose from. You can use any code either CSS or HTML. There are also loads of other functionality that comes with Shopify. Add apps to improve your marketing abilities, seamlessly manage your online store and enhance SEO.

Register A Domain

Aside from having a tool to build your site you need a name for it and a place to put it. The domain name is basically your address on the internet. Try and choose a catchy name that's relevant to your business or website content.

You can choose to register your domain with a company that specializes in domain registration eg. Namecheap, Register or Godaddy or you can let the company that's going to host your website (see below) do it for you. Often they will do this for free if you sign up to their service.

There will typically be a domain search tool that helps you check the availability of your desired domain name. If the name isn’t available, the company will suggest alternatives and may even let you know domain names that come at a cheaper price.

Host your website

A website is basically a collection of files on a computer. That computer could be your own (it's possible to host a website on your own but it's not generally recommended). Normally you'll want to choose a web hosting provider as they will have the servers and infrastructure designed to present your website to the world in a safe, reliable and efficient manner. Different companies will offer varying amounts of monthly data transfers, email, storage and many more features. You can have a look at the comparison table and reviews on this site if you need help in selecting a good web hosting service.

There are different packages available either for month-to-month payments or annual payments. If you are a user who wants an economical solution then you can choose shared hosting. Virtual private server (VPS) hosting is also good for beginners looking forward to starting a small business. This gives you more power but is more expensive. If you wish to spend even more money then you can go for Dedicated hosting.

With a domain, a web host and site building tools at hand you should soon be ready for visitors.
